I earned my BS in Elementary Science and Special Ed from Eastern Michigan University in 2001. In 2009 I earned my MAED in education from East Carolina University. This is my 19th year in education. I have previously taught in Ohio and North Carolina.
My family and I moved from NC to Colorado in June and it's been quite an adventure. My husband, Jason, is a fundraiser for CU’s law school. We have one daughter, Elayna, who is in 8th grade at Soaring Heights. Our family is rounded out by 2 rescue puppies and 3 rescue guinea pigs. This summer we have been exploring Colorado. In my free time I like to knit, crochet, read, ride horses, and snorkel/scuba dive. |

This is my 2nd year teaching (my first was here at Soaring Heights last year). I graduated from CU Boulder with a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in 2013. After working as a skateboard camp counselor for a couple of years, I realized that working with kids is my passion. I went back to CU Boulder to get my
teacher’s license and taught within St Vrain throughout my education program. I strongly believe that each student learns in a unique way and I want to use that to help them thrive in the classroom. Outside of school, I got married over the summer to my wonderful wife, Caitlin. I am an avid skateboarder. I have been sponsored (and currently still am) since I was in high school. Through skateboarding, I have traveled the world and continue to travel as much as I can during breaks and the summer. I also enjoy playing tennis, hiking, and watching football and hockey with my wife. |

It is truly an honor to be part of the Soaring Heights community and a member of the 4th grade team!
My bachelor’s degree is in Political Science and German Language from Metropolitan State College of Denver. Originally, I had hoped to go into law, however, I realized my true passion and heart belonged to teaching after interning in a Waldorf school in Germany. I returned home and pursued my Master’s Degree Educational Psychology at the University of Colorado Denver and most recently, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Denver. What I most enjoy about teaching is the relationships I build with my students and families each year. There is nothing more satisfying than watching my students grow and flourish in their academic and social/emotional development throughout the school year. It’s so rewarding! Even better is when they come back the next year, or even years later and tell me how much they learned while being in my class. My husband, Ari, daughter, Ava and I live here in Erie. Ava will be a student at Soaring Heights as well!. We love the Colorado outdoors lifestyle and you may see us enjoying our beautiful Erie community! If you do see us, don’t be a stranger and say hi! I look forward to teaching your children in the upcoming year. Nina Starks |

I am greatly looking forward to this year as it will be my second here at Soaring Heights, eighth as a fourth grade teacher and eleventh as an educator. My love of teaching began 12 years ago in a kindergarten classroom. I sort of "fell into" a teaching job after graduating with my B.A. in Anthropology from the University of California, Fullerton. Once discovering that teaching was my passion I returned to school to obtain my M.Ed in Elementary Education from the University of Nevada, Reno. I love exploring and learning with my students through inquiry each day. Seeing my students incorporate their own creativity, watching them collaborate together to solve problems and supporting them in helping make their ideas become reality is at the very core of why I love being a teacher.
My husband, Scott, is a fifth-grade teacher at Timberline PK8 in Longmont. Our son, Finnley, just turned three in May and keeps us on our toes with his funny, creative, energetic and loving personality. Our family is rounded out by our two dogs, Rusty and Riley, who still love to go outdoors camping, hiking and traveling with us even at 12 years of age. In addition to outdoors activities I really enjoy reading, taking walks with my family and yoga. I look forward to partnering with you in the upcoming year to make fourth grade an unforgettable year for your student. |
